What is a final URL suffix?

A final URL suffix is the set of parameters Google Ads appends after your landing page URL, next to the gclid. Set once at account level, it carries campaign, ad group, keyword and device identifiers to the page.

The final URL suffix for gyms

Google Ads has three places to add tracking to a URL: the final URL itself, a tracking template, and the final URL suffix. The suffix is the simple one. It is a string of parameters that Google sticks on the end of the landing page address at click time, after a question mark, without touching the page you chose. Auto-tagging adds the gclid alongside it, so the visitor lands with both the click key and the readable description.

What goes in it is up to you, and Google fills in placeholders for you. Write a placeholder for the campaign ID and Google replaces it with the real ID on every click; the same for ad group, keyword, creative, device, network and the rest. Set it at account level and every campaign inherits it, which is the only sane way to run it across several gyms with dozens of campaigns. A campaign-level suffix overrides the account one, so check that nobody has set one that drops the fields you need.

The stakes for a gym are in the join. Your own tracking, your CRM and your reports need to know which campaign a visit came from without asking Google, and the gclid alone does not say. Names are the tempting answer and the wrong one: campaign names get renamed, and a report built on names breaks the day someone tidies up the account. IDs are stable, and the suffix is where they travel. UTM parameters can ride in the same suffix for anything that reads them.

Where it breaks: redirects and shorteners. A landing page that bounces through a redirect can lose the whole query string, and a link tool that renames keys turns a known parameter into an unknown one. Open a real ad preview, land on the page, and read the address bar; every value should still be there after the page settles.

How Adsu uses the final URL suffix

Adsu supplies a template for exactly this. It goes in as an account-level final URL suffix, with auto-tagging left on, so the gclid stays available and the campaign, ad group, creative, keyword, device, network, placement, target and location identifiers travel with the visit. The Adsu pixel reads a defined set of parameter names on the landing page and stores them with the visit; Tracking → Parameters in the app shows the exact vocabulary it expects, and Tracking → Sources shows how the visit was classified. Adsu counts verified stages only: if a stage cannot be verified, it is not counted. Every report is one line per campaign per location.

Adsu credits the last eligible touch inside the 30 days before the payment. Booked, showed and paid go back to Google as offline conversions and to Meta through the Conversions API. Because the campaign ID arrived with the visit, the scorecard can show the campaign by name and still match the click by ID when the name changes.

Questions, answered.

  • At account level, in the account settings under tracking, so every campaign inherits it. It can also be set per campaign, ad group or ad, and the most specific one wins, so a suffix left on one old campaign can quietly override the account template. For a gym running many campaigns, set it once at the top and remove the overrides.

  • A tracking template rewrites the whole click URL, usually to send the click through a third-party redirect before it reaches your page. A final URL suffix only appends parameters to the landing URL you already chose, with no redirect. For tracking a gym’s ads the suffix is the right tool: nothing to bounce through, nothing to strip the gclid.

  • The suffix is where the UTMs go for Google Ads, so it is not a choice between them. Put utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign in the suffix beside the ID placeholders and every click arrives with both the readable labels and the stable IDs. Auto-tagging adds the gclid separately, and it should stay on.
