What is Google Ads conversion tracking?

Google Ads conversion tracking is how Google learns which clicks led to something valuable. Auto-tagging adds a gclid to each click, a conversion action records what happened, and the conversion arrives from your website tag or from your records.

Google Ads conversion tracking for gyms

Four parts, and a gym needs all four. Auto-tagging is an account setting that appends a gclid, a unique click ID, to the landing URL of every click. The conversion action is the thing you tell Google to count: a form, a call, a booking, a purchase. The tag is the snippet on your website that reports on-site conversions. And the import is how conversions that happened off the website, such as a payment at the front desk, get back to Google with the gclid attached.

The Final URL suffix matters more than most gym owners realize. It is the set of parameters Google appends after the gclid, and it is where the campaign, ad group, keyword and device identifiers travel so that whatever captures the visit knows exactly which ad it came from. Set it once at account level and every campaign inherits it; skip it and the gclid arrives alone.

The stakes: without the gclid captured at the enquiry, a member who paid three weeks later cannot be tied back to the click, and Google keeps optimizing for whatever the on-site tag reported, which is the form. With it, the payment can be imported against the click, and Google’s bidding learns which searches produce members.

Where it misleads: a conversion action set to count every conversion will count the same person’s three form submissions as three. Check the counting setting, and use one action per stage rather than one action for everything.

How Adsu uses Google Ads conversion tracking

Adsu keeps auto-tagging on and adds its parameter template as an account-level Final URL suffix, so the gclid and the campaign identifiers reach the Adsu pixel on your landing page and are stored with the visit. When the same person enquires, books, shows and pays, each stage is tied back to that click. Adsu counts verified stages only: if a stage cannot be verified, it is not counted. Every report is one line per campaign per location.

Booked, showed and paid go back to Google as offline conversions and to Meta through the Conversions API. Adsu credits the last eligible touch inside the 30 days before the payment. Nobody at the gym uploads a spreadsheet; the offline conversions go back as each stage is verified.

Questions, answered.

  • Turn on auto-tagging, create one conversion action per stage you care about (booked, showed, paid), put the tag on your site for the on-site events, and set up an import for the stages that happen off-site. Then apply a Final URL suffix so the campaign identifiers reach your landing page with the gclid. Adsu does the capture and the import for you.

  • A named thing Google counts as a success: a form submission, a phone call, a purchase, an imported offline event. Each has its own counting rule, value and attribution settings, and Smart Bidding optimizes toward the actions marked primary. For a gym, make the primary actions the stages that mean a member, not the form.

  • Because the conversion action it is counting is the form, and everyone who fills in a form is a conversion, whether or not they ever book. Until booked, showed and paid are imported as their own conversions, Google has no way to tell a member from a curious click.
