What is auto-tagging?
Auto-tagging is the Google Ads setting that adds a gclid, Google’s unique click ID, to the landing URL every time someone clicks your ad. Keep it on: without it, a payment weeks later cannot be matched back to the click.

Auto-tagging for gyms
Auto-tagging is a single switch in your Google Ads account settings. With it on, every click on one of your ads arrives at your website with a gclid on the end of the URL: a unique code for that one click that Google can recognize later. With it off, the click arrives naked, and there is no way to tell Google afterwards that this visitor became a member.
For a gym the payoff is delayed, which is exactly why the tag matters. The person who clicked does not pay on the website. They enquire, book a consult, show up a week later and pay at the front desk three weeks after the click. If the gclid was captured at the enquiry and stored with the person, that payment can be sent back to Google with the gclid attached and Google will credit the exact click, keyword and campaign. If auto-tagging was off, the click was never labeled, and the member is a stranger to the campaign that produced them.
Manual tagging is the alternative some agencies still use: UTM parameters typed onto each ad’s URL. They name the campaign in words you can read, which is useful, but they cannot be imported back into Google Ads as a conversion, and they are only as consistent as the person typing them. The two are not either-or. Keep auto-tagging on for the gclid, and let the final URL suffix carry the readable fields.
Where it breaks: something between the ad and your form drops the parameter. A redirect that rewrites the URL, a link shortener, a website builder that strips unknown query strings, a form embedded from another domain. The setting is on and the gclid still never reaches anything that stores it. Test a real ad click and look at the address bar on the page where the form lives; the code should still be there.
How Adsu uses auto-tagging
Adsu’s setup guide says it in one line: keep Google auto-tagging enabled so the gclid can power exact click matching. The Adsu pixel on your landing page reads the gclid and stores it with the visit, and when that visitor enquires, the enquiry inherits it, along with the campaign identifiers the final URL suffix carries. Adsu counts verified stages only: if a stage cannot be verified, it is not counted. Every report is one line per campaign per location.
Adsu credits the last eligible touch inside the 30 days before the payment. Booked, showed and paid go back to Google as offline conversions and to Meta through the Conversions API. The gclid captured on the visit is what lets Google match that offline conversion to the click. Connecting the account is covered on the Google Ads integration page.
Questions, answered.
On, always, for any account whose members pay somewhere other than the website. Auto-tagging is what makes offline conversions possible: the gclid it adds is the only key Google will accept to match a front-desk payment back to a specific click. Turning it off saves nothing and costs you every conversion that happens after the form.
Auto-tagging is Google adding a gclid to the URL for you on every click; manual tagging is you adding UTM parameters to each ad’s URL by hand. The gclid identifies the click and can be imported back to Google Ads; UTMs describe the campaign in words and cannot. Use both: auto-tagging for the key, a final URL suffix for the description.
It should not, and when it seems to, the page is at fault rather than the tag. Some website builders and redirect tools reject or strip query parameters they do not recognize, which drops the gclid before anything can store it. Fix the redirect or the page settings so the parameter survives, then test a real ad click and check the URL on the form page.
